Potentially buying 06 Subaru Legacy GT ?

Post by 4g63mightymax » Sun Feb 12, 2012 6:34 pm

Hi.
A car fell into my lap today and I'm wondering if you guys can school me a bit.

- 2006 Legacy GT 2.5 turbo, auto.
- Low compression on cyl 3 (50psi)
- VERY clean well maintained vehicle
- New tires
- Red with every option, including navigation & sunroof.
- Was running great and then POOF, sudden loss of compression
- There is no compression coming out the oil filler tube, which I would expect if it was a damage piston or rings.
- oil & antifreeze look good.
- Engine is not noisy, but runs really rough
- Doesn't have blue or black smoke out the tail pipe. Exhaust smells normal.
- Timing belt done at 100K, car has 140K, driven by a woman in her 40's ?

SO: Do we think it's a burned/damage valve? Common? Is there a chance that it could have a bad piston and not puff compression out the oil filler cap? How difficult are head gaskets & valves on one of these? Do I have to pull the motor to do it them? Should I? School me.

Thanks guys! I need to make a decision by Monday afternoon 2/13/12.

If you feel like pulling the head, buy it.
If you want it to just run turn-key, don't.

It is very easily tuned, so it could be a blast.
It also is yet another car in your stable.

you shouldnt have to pull the motor to pull the heads. It should be ralatively easy. Subaru is known for leaking headgaskets....

What I would do first is put that cyl with low compression at tdc and fill it full of compressed air. Then see where the cOmpression is leaking. I'd assume it would be a valve, but car converters do mask a lot of oil smoke sometimes. Iirc that car has 3.

The tricky thing is that I can't really do any diagnostics with tools before buying it. So I sorta have to make an educated gamble.

Also, 140K..... Is that way too many for a Subaru? Be honest. It is a super nice car, and they were highway miles, but miles are miles.

It having low compression wouldn't stop me. Especially if the price is right. It can be fixed!

So, will you be needing to borrow my Tactrix OpenPort2 in the near future?

- Engine is out.
- I can see the burned/damaged valve
- Removing the intake manifold sucked balls bigtime.
- Separating the engine and trans sucked too. The pass side wanted blood.
- Heads come off tomorrow.

Sweet action! Glad it's just a valve! Are you going to pull both heads and upgrade the valves to a stainless steel valve? I figure that may prevent the issue from arising again if you plan on keeping it.

I'm definitely pulling both heads to inspect them. I'm not sure what valves I'll install though. My guess is that I will just do stock replacements. After all, this one lasted 140K. :)
