Finally got this thing to my house yesterday! I was able to find a key for it, it cranks over but won't start. I believe there may be an issue still with the immobilizer system but I haven't had much time to play with it yet. Plan to go for a bonded title so we'll see how that goes after I get it running. So far $0 in it, and I don't believe it needs much work, I do know currently the 4wd doesn't work, pretty sure the front diff needs to be rebuilt. Here's some quick pictures I took before work yesterday.

It needs a good cleaning but otherwise it's in pretty good shape.

Looks sweet. :)

Is the key a valid chip one, or just a door-only copy?

Some people never have anything except ideas. Go do it.
Emissions & fuel economy haven't exactly been areas of strength for past rotary power plants, but absolutely no one with a soul has ever cared.

I believe it has the chip in it, but I could be wrong. I have worked on this jeep off and on over the past 15 years and I know it has electrical gremlins, but don't recall any having to do with the immobilizer.

It did almost catch my Toyota on fire one time while trying to jump it, had a short in the ignition wiring and fried my jumper cables instantly, burned the hell out of my hands pulling the burning cables off with no gloves. I wasn't about to let either car catch on fire though. At one point in time you had to start it the ghetto way, jump the starter right off the battery, but the previous owner ended up replacing the harness and fixing that issue. Going to borrow an Obd scanner from a buddy and check codes tomorrow, kinda ridiculous that I don't have my own by now, but I've never had anything new enough to need one hahaha. Looking at a few on eBay, may have to buy my own soon.

The actron ones are pretty good, and you can also get the bluetooth ones.

The bluetooth ones work great actually.

Blue tooth ones work awesome. My blue tooth one allows me to scan multiple computers in vehicle and not just the pcm.

If it is an immobilizer issue, I would imagine you will get a security light on the dash flashing at you when you try to start it.

if the light on the dash doesn't flash, it may be fun to just check for spark and fuel and see where that leads you.

I know I've replaced the crank sensor on one of those engines once, I don't remember if that caused a no-start issue or not though. It was years ago and it was a memory I was hoping to forget. lol

Either way - SWEET FREE JEEP!

Here's the thing with the light. Reading online the light is supposed to come on for 3 seconds, then turn off. If the key is wrong, the light will come on for 3 seconds, turn off, then turn back on and flash. If the light comes on for 3 seconds, turns off, then turns back on steady, there's an issue with the system. If there's an issue with the system, it SHOULD store a code.

In this jeep, the light comes on when you put the key in and stays on. No flashing, no self test (3 seconds on then off). I checked the codes yesterday and got nothing, but the code reader I used may not see those codes, may need a better one. I checked for spark and got nothing, don't hear the fuel pump prime either, but I didn't pull a fuel line to see if it's actually not working.

Sounds like a dead immobilizer unit.
Try unplugging the key reader coil and seeing if it notices.

That's what I'm thinking and I'll try that next. Supposedly keys with the gray rubber are chip keys, black rubber are door only copies. They key I have is gray so it should be working.

Is it possible that there is an aftermarket alarm?

Also - try this super cool move:
- Get out of the jeep
- Lock the door with the key
- Unlock the door with the key
- Get inside and try to start it
- See if anything changes

Sometimes alarm systems hate me, and this resets them to their happy place.
